Abstract

This study aims to investigate the management strategy of university scholarship funds at the Zakat Collection Unit (In Indonesian abbreviation:UPZ, which stands for Unit Pengumpulan Zakat) of the Islamic University of Riau (UIR) which is located on Kaharudin Nasution street, No. 113 Pekanbaru. The type of the study is field research with a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques of the study are observation, interviews and documentation. Then the data are analyzed and finally the conclusion is drawn. The informants of the study are: the Head of the Zakat Collection Unit, a secretary, Members of Distribution Division, and a Mustahik. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the management strategy of scholarship funds at UPZ of UIR is carried out based on the strategic management functions inisiated by George R. Terry, namely planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling. Some of the actions taken by UPZ in managing scholarship funds are making banners for each faculty and distributing zakat approval letters to all faculties in UIR. For the organizational aspect, the UPZ has an organizational structure in order to know what obligations and responsibility of the members. For the implementation aspect, the UPZ of UIR provides the scholarship funds only for the students of UIR. For the control aspect, the UPZ of UIR has a monitoring process. This supervision is carried out by the BAZNAS of Riau Province.
