Abstract

Alternative energy is a form of energy utilization to save the earth and supply energy needs. The limited fossil energy or non-renewable energy encourages the existence of alternative energy, one of which is the design of electric energy- producing sports equipment or Rowing Machines. Rowing machines generate electricity through the rotation of the flywheel to turn a generator using human power. This study uses an experimental method by designing a prototype according to the criteria of the flywheel generator. The components of the Rowing Machine consist of a flywheel, generator, transmission, gears, chain, seat, towing lever and spring rope. The frame is made of iron material with an outer length of 250 cm, an inner length of 220 cm, a front height of 25 cm, a rear height of 35 cm and a width of 40 cm from the supporting legs of the frame. The flywheel is made with a mass dimension of 8 kg and a diameter of 40 cm. The results of the experiment used a 5-speed bicycle groupset with a time of 1.5 seconds for each tooth. The final result of the Rowing Machine experiment shows that the output power is directly proportional to the torque produced. The maximum powerproduced by the rowing machine is 267.75 Watt with a torque of 2.06 N.m at a rotating speed of 1423 Rpm at speed 1. The ratio of weight also affects the power and power produced.
