Abstract

Bagasse is a solid waste of sugarcane containing lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose which is a by-product of the sugarcane extraction process. One of the uses of lignin is in oil extraction activities using the EOR method, namely lignosulfonate surfactants because of its resistance to salinity, and it is easier and cheaper to obtain. Lignin is the largest component in bagasse, about 12-26%, therefore the isolation and separation of lignin can be carried out which can then be used as lignosulfonates. The high lignin content in bagasse provides opportunities for utilization for various needs.. The purpose of this study was to isolate lignin from bagasse and determine the effect of sulfuric acid concentration in producing lignin so as to produce the best yield and purity of lignin. The experimental design used was a factorial completely randomized design with a concentration factor of 20% and 35%. Lignin as raw material for surfactants is obtained from the process of delignification of bagasse using the 2% NaOH extraction method. Optimum use of NaOH with a ratio of 1:10 with bagasse, then proceed with the isolation process with the acid deposition method. The lignin characteristics of both types of samples are visually brownish in color. The best isolate conditions were conditions where the lignin produced had the highest yield value and lignin content. Based on the results of the study, black leachate with a concentration of 20% produced yields and lignin content of 22.7 and 83.7%, respectively. The results of FTIR identification of lignin isolates showed absorption spectro patterns which were mostly similar to standard lignin.
