Abstract

People are extremely quickly exposed to excessive news about an issue, including health information, due to the rapid development of information technology and telecommunications. Access to health information might make it easier for people to do self-diagnose which can trigger anxiety in itself (cyberchondria). Person with strong e-health literacy are less likely to suffer from cyberchondria because they are aware that the internet is merely a tool for delivering results related to their search terms and cannot objectively and scientifically diagnose symptoms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between e-Health Literacy and cyberchondria. This research is correlational quantitative research. The population of this study consisted of 170.194 young adults living in Pekanbaru, and 100 of them were selected as samples using the purposive sampling technique. The measuring instrument used is the Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS) by McElroy and Shevlin (2014) and the e-HLS measuring instrument (e-Health Literacy Scale) by Norman and Skinner (2006). Based on hypothesis analysis results by using the Pearson Product Moment correlation technique, the correlation value (r) is -0,496 with a significance value of 0,000 (p <0,5), which means that the higher the level of E-Health Literacy, the lower the level of Cyberchondria and the lower the level of E-Health Literacy, the higher the level of Cyberchondria in individuals.
