Abstract

This study aims to determine interpersonal communication between Riau Islamic University students of the Sedinginan Malay ethnic group in Pekanbaru and its obstacles. This research uses a qualitative approach. This research uses purposive sampling technique. The subjects of this study were active students with the coldest Malay ethnic background at the Islamic University of Riau. Data collection techniques using interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was done by descriptive technique. The findings showed that interpersonal communication between the coolest Malay students at UIR with students from other ethnicities could be understood by each other, both verbally and non-verbally, including a combination of the two. Interpersonal communication experienced by Malay students As cold as with friends on campus at first there was a sense of anxiety and confusion in communicating, but now they have been able to adapt and are getting used to the environment in which they are. The obstacles that occur in interpersonal communication of Riau Islamic UniversityMalay students (Sedinginan Village) in Pekanbaru are the mixing of the use of Indonesian and regional languages, including the lack of vocabulary mastery including the accent used. However, in general, students' interpersonal communication is still well established.
