Abstract

When the drilling operation is in progress, the mud is very prone to loss of filtration if it passes through a layer zone that has high enough fracturing and has a fairly high permeability, and has a fairly low formation pressure, this event is called loss circulation. Loss circulaton is caused by hydrostatic pressure that exceeds the pressure of the formation itself, this event if left unchecked will cause various other problems, such as increased costs, clogged productive layers, pinched drill string due to mud cake formed, and the most dangerous is loss of control. to the well which can cause blowout. The problem of loss circulation itself can be overcome by adding Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC), but the additive is quite expensive so it requires 15-18% of the total drilling operation cost just to design the mud. In this study starch/starch/potato starch flour is used as an alternative to CMC which has an expensive price, the price of potato starch which tends to be cheap and environmentally friendly is the reason why this research was carried out, besides that potato starch flour was also combined with 2 grams of caustic soda to for each mud sample that has been added with potato starch flour with a mass variation of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 grams, this is done to determine whether potato starch flour alone is sufficient to increase rheology and reduce the value of filtration loss compared to the sample given 2 grams of caustic soda. The results showed that the mud sample that was only given potato starch flour with a mass variation of 2-10 grams was not very good at reducing the filtration loss value which was only around 22-12 ml, in contrast to the combination sample between starch starch and 2 grams of caustic soda which received the results of 9-5.2 ml, the rheological value itself experienced a very large increase when caustic soda was added to the mud sample with potato starch additives where the Plastic Viscosity value was 9-24 cp directly proportional to the increase in apparent viscosity density, yield point, gel strength, mud that experienced an increase in pH also experienced a reduction in filtration loss and an increase in rheology
