Abstract

The forging process is the formation of metal which is carried out by changing the shape of the metal by plastic deformation by giving a mechanical blow from the outside. One process that has better size accuracy and surface quality is cold working forging. This study aims to determine the effect of blow variations on the cold working forging process to observe phenomena including hardness and microstructure observations. In this study, the selected material is Aluminum 5035 with variations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 strokes and a room temperature of 27oC. The results of microstructural observations at 0 strokes show that the phase formed is Aluminum (white), the silicon eutectic phase is located at the boundaries of Aluminum and silicon which is dark in color, at 25 strokes it is seen that silicon and the eutectoid phase begin to form in small pieces, at At 50 strokes, the effectoid phase begins to break and more silicon appears, 75 and 100 strokes, the effectoid phase begins to break and more silicon appears. This also causes the hardness value of the material to be high. The results of the hardness test on the variation of strokes showed that the highest hardness value was at 100 strokes, which was 45.97 VHN, while the lowest hardness value was at 0 strokes, which was 36.18 VHN. This is due to the pressure (blow) given to the material so that the solidification of the atomic value (element) of the metal occurs. The metal will increase in hardness when the metal undergoes plastic deformation due to cold working, in this case the forging process that results in strain hardening of hot working forgings. This is due to the pressure and heat that give hardness to the material. The higher the stroke, the higher the hardness value in JIS SUP 9.
