Abstract

Rangsang Pesisir District which is the center of the largest coffee plantation in the Meranti Islands Regency. The potential of coffee commodities that are able to contribute to the economy not only benefits the region but can improve people's welfare. However, the large number of coffee commodities and the high contribution to the economy in Rangsang Pesisir District are not matched by the welfare of coffee farmers. This is because farmers are only able to sell coffee in the form of raw materials, besides the lack of information and marketing networks for farmers forces coffee farmers to sell their harvests to collectors. In addition, not many people are able to process coffee beans into a product that has high value and produces added value. The purpose of this study is to formulate a local economic development strategy based on coffee commodities in improving the economy and welfare of the community in Rangsang Pesisir District. The type of data used in this study is primary data and secondary data for 2015-2020, in this study obtained from the distribution of questionnaires in Rangsang Pesisir District, secondary data in this study was obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Meranti Islands Regency in 2020. Methods used in this research is descriptive analysis method and SWOT analysis. Based on the results of the study that the independent variables (factors that can increase productivity) affect the independent variable (community welfare) where the coffee production produced by coffee farmers is 22-43% for one harvest if it is developed optimally so that it can compete in a wider market. . The strategies used to improve the welfare of the community include increasing the quality and production of coffee commodities, empowering farmer groups, and forming coffee clusters to facilitate community movement.
