Abstract

Advances in the field of the materials science, especially in the field of composites, continue to increase along with the increasing material requirements for the product. One of the materials that is often needed is ceramic. The properties of ceramics are largely determined by the crystal structure, chemical composition and inherent minerals. Ceramics have brittle, strong and rigid properties, most industrial ceramics are formed from special chemical powders such as silicon carbide, alumina, and barium titanite. Surface Roughness is a very important thing for a composite pellet, this is because the material to be made into a component must have a certain roughness value so that it can be used according to the function of the component. Therefore, as an alternative to increasing the surface hardness of composite pellets, silica is used as a reinforcing material and PEG as resin in composite pellets. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the size of silica sand with mesh 70, 80, and 90. Then ithe resulting material will be subjected to Heat Treatment, ASTM E 18 Hardness Tese, ISO 1302 Roughness Test and ISO 03-3205 Thickness Test.
