Abstract

Leaf springs are springs in the form of flat plates with a certain width and are subjected to lateral loads that cause the plates to bend. Leaf springs are a component of the suspension system that functions to absorb shocks from the road and vibrations of the wheels so that they are not transmitted directly to the vehicle body and add to the ability of the tires to grip the road surface and support the overall weight of the vehicle. Failure on the leaf springs of the canter truck is due to the heaviest load on the back of the truck, which is caused by uneven road conditions resulting in repeated loads and resulting in broken leaf springs. This study aims to obtain a life cycle, equivalent alternating stress. , fatigue sensitivity and safety factor for load variations of 8000 kg, 10000 kg and 12000 kg. This study compared the specifications of the initial 9 layers of leaf springs and 10 layers of modified leaf springs. The results showed that among the lowest life cycles indicated by the 10 layers modified leaf springs with a load of 12000 kg, namely 5.45 x 105 cycles, the alternating stress acting on this spring was 370 MPa. Even though it is still lower than the yield stress of the SUP 9A spring material, this condition is no longer safe because the safety factor that is owned is only 2.96. This value is lower than the standard safety factor that leaf springs must have, namely 3.0-4.5. the critical area that needs attention is the containment area. It can be concluded that the modifications made did not increase the life of the spring because an additional layer was applied to the second part of the first layer where it should have been at the bottom.
