Abstract

The activity of using Malay in Pekanbaru is difficult for its speakers to find. Because young people follow more popular languages in the city of Pekanbaru. Moreover, he is fluent in using language that is more often used or often heard in Pekanbaru. So it is very difficult to know that he is Malay. This phenomenon also occurs in the Faculty of Communication Sciences, where Malay students are reluctant to speak Malay. This study aims to find out how the application of Malay in the Faculty of Communication students, and to find out the inhibiting factors of the use of Malay in the Faculty of Communication students. This study involved 9 ethnic Malay student informants, and this study used a postpositivism paradigm with qualitative descriptive methods aimed at gaining a general understanding of social reality from the perspective of the participants. From the results of the study it can be seen that actually students who are ethnic Malay do not not want to use Malay in the Faculty of Communication Sciences but only want to appreciate and do not want to misunderstand the use of Malay to students who are not Malay. From the interview results it can also be seen that in fact ethnic Malay students themselves are actually proud of using Malay in the Faculty of Communication. But what becomes an inhibiting factor for Malay ethnic students in speaking Malay in the Faculty of Communication is the environment. Because the Faculty of Communication at the Riau Islamic University does not provide adequate facilities or environment for Malay students to use Malay even though it is in Malay. So this environment is the main factor.
