Abstract
Android is an open source operating system, and Google releases the code under the Apache License. The open source code and licensing licenses on Android allow software to be freely modified and distributed by device makers, wireless carriers, and application developers. In addition, Android has a large community of application developers (apps) that extend device functionality, generally written in customized versions of the Java programming language. As of October 2013, there were more than one million apps available for Android, and about 50 billion apps had been downloaded from Google Play, Android's main app store. A survey in April-May 2013 found that Android is the most popular platform for developers, used by 71% of mobile app developers. At Google I/O 2014, Google reported that there were more than one billion monthly active Android users, up from 583 million in June 2013.
