Abstract

Interest is the state of wanting to know or learn about something. People feel motivated wanting to know more or learn something when they have the interest of it. Likewise, when someone have interest in music, there is motivation to learn music. The objective of this research is to examine the interest of children aged 8 to 10 years old in learning music at Cantabile Music School Pekanbaru. This study was conducted at Cantabile Music School on December 20th 2019 until January 20th 2020. The sample of this study was 20 participants (17 students and 3 teachers). The method used in this research was descriptive analysis of qualitative research. Data collection techniques was more on participant observation, in-depth interview and documentation. Based on in-depth interview on students aged 8-10 years old, the researcher found that the interest of children in learning music is influenced by few factors such as parents’ command, imitate their brother or sister, self-interest and friends. The findings of in-depth interview of 17 students examined the interest of children in learning music at Cantabile Music School suggested that the majority of students (8 students) were learning music due to their own interest in music, 5 students were influenced by their parents’ command, 2 students learn music influenced by their brother or sister who were learning music and 2 students interested to learn music influenced by their friends.
