Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the meaning of Human Interest in journalistic photographs by Sebastiao Salgado in the documentary film "The Salt of the Earth". Photos are the result of visualizing an event or event in the form of an image. Therefore apart from being an art, in a photo also contains a message or meaning conveyed to people who see it, and photos can be one of the communication media. The understanding of human interest in the scope of photography according to Soelarko (1975: 9) is when a photographic work emphasizes the aspect of the story rather than the aspect of its visual beauty. The method used in this study is a type of qualitative research methodology with semiotic analysis as the analysis knife. The primary data source in this study is a journalistic photograph of Sebastiao Salgado in the documentary film "The Salt of The Earth" and secondary data sources in this study include the writing of articles, books, research journals, thesis of previous research, and sources from the internet relating to research objects that can support this research. By applying the model of Charles Sander Pierce namely, sign, object, and interpretant or also called triangle meaning in this study, it can be seen how researchers describe images or photographs that are included in the types of journalistic photographs that contain human interest. The conclusion of this study is that the photos that are categorized as human interest photos are portraits of humans with all the problems, concerns, or achievements that create sympathy for the attraction of those who see them. Often human interest photos highlight issues of poverty, life struggles, social injustice, and lives that are very contrasting. Human interest photos also portray humans with all aspects of their lives which are interesting objects to be immortalized in an image. Activities and activities carried out by humans can produce a photograph that is very touching for those who see it. Researchers divided Sebastiao Salgado's photos into three categories, namely genocide (massacre), exodus (displacement), and hunger.
