Abstract

This study aims to determine the community's communication behavior in the Kuantan Singingi pacu tradition. Hymes stated that the ethnographic elements of communication are divided into speech society, communication activities, communication components, communication competences, and language varieties. The analysis in this study used a qualitative descriptive method with data sources from interviews and field observations. The results of this study indicate that the community communication behavior in the Kuantan Singingi pacu tradition is speech society, communication activities, communication components, communication competence, and language varieties. For the speaking community, the language used in communicating uses Indonesian, but there are also some visitors who use regional languages because the majority of visitors are local tourists. For communication activities the occurrence of communication events starts from the training process to the downstream process of the two paths racing on the arena. For the communication component there is communication between fellow viewers whose aim is to greet and greet each other, the topics discussed are about the paths that will be racing, and the purpose of the topics they discuss still leads to the path. For communication competence, the barrier that often occurs when communicating is noise, so the communication delivered is unclear and cannot be heard. For language varieties, the language that is often used as a sign that the downstream line is in a winning position is by the characteristics of the front direction of the path ahead of its opponent who is on the side or with the standing of the dancer or jockey child, then for the language used when supporting the route favorite is by shouting the name of the mainstay route, besides that it is also in the form of slogans or slogans made by supporters and runners.
