Abstract

This study is motivated by the lack of students speaking skills in class IX at SMPN 2 Kepenuhan. Speaking skills are very important in the learning process because if the students cannot speak properly and correctly, they will have difficulties in participating learning activities for all subjects. The symptoms existed among the students are: there are still some students who do not respond when asked questions, there are some students who are less skilled at speaking and lazy to speak, and there are some students who feel afraid and embarrassed to speak during learning. These symptoms can be seen from the results of the recapitulation test in the pre-cycle showing that the students’ speaking skills are in the low category. The problem formulation of this study is whether the use of discussion method can improve the students’ speaking skills in class IX at SMPN 2 Kepenuhan. This study aims to improve the students’ speaking skills through discussion method in class IX at SMPN 2 Kepenuhan. The subject of this study is the students in class IX at SMPN 2 Kepenuhan, while the object is the discussion method. The data collection techniques of this study are observation, tests and documentation. The type of this study is classroom action research with 3 cycles whereas each cycle consists of 4 actions, namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be seen that the students’ speaking skills before using the discussion method were in a low category with a percentage of 37%, after using the discussion method in cycle I, their speaking skills increased to the moderate category with a percentage of 41%, then the researcher continued with cycle II that showed students’ speaking skills kept increasing to the moderate category with a percentage of 42%. Then, the researcher continued with the third cycle, the students’ speaking skills kept increasing to the very high category with a percentage of 76%. So, it can be concluded that the use of discussion method can improve the students’ speaking skills in learning Islamic Studies in class IX at SMPN 2 Kepenuhan.
