Abstract
Anodizing is a coating process by electrolysis to coat the metal surface with a material or oxide that protects, improves its physical and mechanical properties. In the anodizing process, stress and time play an important role in the formation of the oxide layer. This study aims to determine the mechanical strength of the oxide layer. In this study, the material to be coated is a motor wheel that uses 6061 aluminum as the anode, and conducting aluminum as the cathode. The thickness of the anodizing specimens was measured and the adhesion test was carried out to determine the mechanical strength of the oxide layer. The voltages used are 16 volts and 20 volts and the immersion time is 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes. The anodized specimens were weighed and their thickness measured. The results showed that the higher the applied stress and the longer immersion time, the higher the thickness value obtained. The highest thickness value was obtained on specimens that were immersed with a voltage of 20 volts in an immersion time of 15 minutes which was 49.24 m. while the lowest thickness value occurs in the specimen with a voltage of 16 volts in 5 minutes of immersion, which is 30.22 m. However, from the observation, the physical appearance looks good with a bright blue color on aluminum with a voltage of 20 volts and an immersion time of 10 minutes. The addition of stress and time in the anodizing process did not significantly affect the physical appearance, however, a large stress and a longer time gave a darker blue result and a small stress and a little time resulted in a less bright blue color. In the anodizing adhesion test, there was a slight difference in the oxide layer where at a time of immersion of 10 minutes there was a slight surface roughness of the coating on the part of the indentation affected by the radius bend test, while with an immersion time of 15 minutes there was more surface roughness of the coating on the part of the indentation affected by the bend radius. test, but with an immersion time of 5 minutes there was no surface roughness of the coating on the part of the indentation affected by the radius bend test. This is because the longer the coating time will affect the thickness of the layer and the bend test results.
