Abstract

This research aimed to identify the students’ vowel pronunciations in speech of the third semester students at English Language Education study program of FKIP UIR. Pronunciation is one of the essential elements in speaking and one of a key in order to acquire successful communication and due to that, the researcher interested in identified one type of vowel and decided to focus on analyzed how the pronunciation in diphthong sounds produced by the students. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research design where in processing the data; the researcher described, provides deep analysis and elaborate the results in detail. This research involved the third semester students of English Language Education of FKIP UIR academic year 2019/2020. The sample of this study consists of 15 students that have chosen based on random sampling. For the instrument, it analyzed based on online speech test and used pronunciation application and assessment to measure students’ ability. Based on the research findings, researcher found that there is only 1 student (6,6%) classified as “Good” in pronounced diphthong, 2 students (13,3%) got “Fairly Good”, 7 students (46,6%) got “Fair” and 5 students (33,3%) classified as “Poor”. It means that there is a problem in pronouncing diphthong words due to interlingual and intralingua aspects. In interlingual aspect, it is because our first language has different rules in pronouncing words while in intralingua aspects, it appears because of the struggle faced by EFL or second language students during the learning process and the difficulty of the language itself
