Abstract
ABSTRACT Geographical Indications are included in the category of protection of intellectual property, where intellectual property rights are rights to property arising from human abilities. And this is a legal protection for people who can develop, discover and create a wealth. With this protection, a person gets the intellectual rights to be able to enjoy the results of his creativity based on economic value. The protection of the potential for Geographical Indications aims to protect the uniqueness from counterfeiting or improper use. Based on the background of the problems discussed in this study, how is the potential of Geographical Indications for Meranti-Riau Province liberica coffee in improving the welfare of local communities and what are the obstacles before and after obtaining a Geographical Indication certificate for Meranti-Riau stimulated Liberica coffee. Legal writing in this study was carried out by observational research by conducting a direct survey of the field (field research) to collect primary and secondary data obtained from respondents through interviews to be used as data or information as material in research, the nature of this research is descriptive, namely to provide an overview as accurate as possible regarding the facts and existing characteristics regarding the Geographical Indications of Meranti liberica coffee. Based on the results of the discussion and analysis, it can be concluded that Geographical Indications of Liberica coffee improve the welfare of local communities, with the Geographical Indication of Liberica coffee certificates will be a motivation for the Meranti community, especially coffee farmers to continue to improve the quality of their crops. Constraints before and after obtaining a certificate of Geographical Indication, the complexity of the requirements for registration of Geographical Indications, and the lack of public legal awareness of Geographical Indications, this occurs because there is no awareness from the public of the importance of Geographical Indications.
