Abstract

This study examines the politeness of rejection speech in Javanese society in SP 5 Mekar Jaya Village, Pangkalan Kerinci District, Pelalawan Regency. The author's limited ability to examine the scope of this pragmatics, the author limits the study of this research to the forms of rejection and politeness scale. The problems in this study are (1) What are the forms of rejection of the Javanese community in SP 5 Mekar Jaya Village, Pangkalan Kerinci District, Pelalawan Regency? (2) How is the politeness scale of the rejection speech of the Javanese community in SP 5 Mekar Jaya Village, Pangkalan Kerinci District, Pelalawan Regency? The purpose of this study is (1) to explore and elaborate on forms of refusal speech (2) to explore and elaborate on the scale of politeness of speech carried out by the Javanese community in SP 5 Mekar Jaya Village, Pangkalan Kerinci District, Pelalawan Regency. The theory used in this research is the theory of Kartomihardjo (in Nadar 2013:98) and Leech (in Rahardi 2005:66-68). The research approach that the author uses in this study is a qualitative approach with content analysis methods. Based on data analysis regarding politeness of rejection speech in Javanese society in SP 5 village of Mekar Jaya, Pangkalan Kerinci sub-district, Pelalawan Regency, there are 50 data spread over 8 indicators of rejection speech forms and 5 indicators of politeness scale. Javanese characteristics must be complemented by a study of language politeness which cannot be separated from the culture of the speaker. Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded that in terms of the form of refusal speech that is most often used in Javanese society is the rejection by using reasons that are found to be twenty-two speech data. Furthermore, in terms of the politeness scale, which is more or dominantly used in Javanese society, the indirectness scale found is thirty-eight utterances and from the politeness level, namely polite, there are thirty speech data and not polite, with eight speech data.
