Abstract

One of the most important aspects in improving students' abilities is that educators can identify what students' mistakes are in learning. This study aims to identify and describe the type of Newman's error students in solving higher order thinking skills questions on arithmetic sequences and series in terms of self-efficacy (self-efficacy). The type of research used is qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects in this study amounted to 32 students of class XI SMA N 2 Dumai. Data were collected using test, questionnaire, and interview techniques. The instruments used were a self-efficacy questionnaire, higher order thinking skills type test questions on arithmetic sequences and series, and interview guidelines. Processing and analyzing data using the Miles and Huberman technique which includes: data reduction, data presentation, as well as drawing conclusions and verification. Based on the results of the study showed that: students with high self-efficacy categories generally experienced transformation errors and errors in the completion process. Students in the moderate self-efficacy category generally make misunderstandings, errors in the completion process and errors in writing the final answer. And students with low self-efficacy categories generally make misunderstandings, errors in the completion process and errors in writing the final answer.
