Abstract

Composite materials is a combination of a materials consisting of two or more materials, and combined to form a materials that has different properties form the original materials. With the abundance of sugarcane fiber in Pekanbaru, this can certainly be utilized, especially in the part of the stems that have the fiber form the juice of sugarcane which is often thrown away and causes a lot of waste. So that sugarcane fibers can be used for the manufacture of composite mateials, by combining sugarcane fibers with epoxy resin. To determine the mechanical properties and immersion of a sugarcane fiber and epoxy resin materials, it is necessary to test the impact and immersion of the composite materials rainwater. With variety 70% resin + 30% fiber, 80% resin + 20% fiber, 90% resin + 10% fiber. With the hope of getting the right composition, and increasing the use of sugarcane fiber waste, to become a new materials. This stage begins with the selection of fiber and mixing the epoxy resin. The manufaturing and testing procedures for these composite materials refer to ASTM impact testing D6110-02. The results of this impact test produce the largest impact value is 282,510 × 10-3 J/mm2 for the volume variasi 90% resin + 10% sugar cane fiber. While the lowest strength of the impact test is 241,896 × 10-3 J/mm2 by volume variasi 70% resin + 30% sugar cane fiber + soaking rainwater for 2 days. So it can be concluded, the less use of sugarcane fiber to be soaked, the better strength and toughness it will be.
