Abstract

Media dependence is a power of mass media in influencing the audience because of the dependence of the audience on the media content presented. This study aims to determine the relationship between the dependence of social media on Covid-19 information on social media among students of the Islamic University of Riau. This study uses a quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents with the characteristics of Riau Islamic University students and students who are active in the use of social media. This study uses the theory of the media dependence system popularized by Sandra Ball Rokeach and Melvin L. De Fluer (1975), where the media dependence theory is a theory related to the power of the media in influencing each audience due to the dependence of the audience on the media content. These factors are divided into two, namely the media is able to meet every audience's needs and the existence of a social change or conflict that is happening in the community. The results of the hypothesis in this study are H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, by obtaining a correlation value (rxy) of 0.583 and obtaining a significance value of 0.000 ( <0.05). So that this study has a significant relationship between social media dependence and the impact of Covid-19 information on Riau Islamic University students with the category of "medium" correlation level.
