Abstract

The press is a social institution and a vehicle for mass communication that carries out journalistic activities including searching, obtaining, possessing, storing, managing and delivering information in the form of text, sound and images, as well as data and graphics and in other forms using print media, electronic media and all types of descriptions available. So many new mass media were launched in a very short period of time. Many media are accused of focusing only on sensational matters and ignoring the basic Journalistic Code of Ethics (KEJ). When the press in carrying out its journalistic activities has violated legal restrictions in this case the criminal law and the news published by the press have entered the court, then it is inseparable from a criminal liability by the press itself. The main problem in this research is the Cause of the occurrence of criminal defamation through online media reporting and Efforts to Overcome Defamation through online media reporting by the Riau Police. Legal research methods conducted, judging from the type of research it belongs to the Observational Research by survey which is to get data from respondents in the field. The nature of the research is analytical descriptive, which is describing the efforts of the Police in tackling defamation through online media reporting in the jurisdiction of the Riau Regional Police. From the results of the study it can be concluded, the factors causing the crime of defamation through online media reporting are as follows: Media Capacity Online, Level of Education / Human Resources, Weak Supervision of the Press Council, Having negative intention or motivation, Low Competence of Journalists. And the countermeasures made by the Riau Police in preventing defamation through online media coverage are pre-emptive, preventive and repressive.
