Abstract

This study aims to determine the elements of dance and the existence of dance in the Maena traditional dance in the life of indigenous Nias people in Nias Village, Tualang District, Siak Regency, Riau Province. The theory used by the writer in writing Maena Traditional Dance is the theory of dance elements by Jazuli (2008: 13) and the theory of the existence of dance by Hadi (2002: 31). The method used is descriptive analysis method using interactive qualitative data. The data collection technique uses several techniques, including observation techniques, interview techniques and documentation techniques. Maena Traditional Dance is a traditional dance originating from Nias, North Sumatra. The Maena traditional dance has elements of motion, floor design, music, dynamics, themes, costumes and make-up. The movements contained in the Maena Traditional Dance are very simple. Maena Traditional Dance does not have a variety of movements so that the movements in Maena Traditional Dance are easy to learn, these movements include hand movements and leg movements that are moved simultaneously back and forth or left and right to the rhythm of the music. While the existence of the Maena Traditional Dance can be viewed from historical aspects, religious aspects, aspects of customs, aspects of society and aspects of art. Maena traditional dance is a dance that has been passed down from the ancestors from generation to generation.
