Abstract

Forging or forging is an emphasis on metal with high compressive power so that it can be said, forging is the process of forming metal in a hot state by hitting it using a hot machine. The blow is given to the metal with the aim of increasing the natural hardness of the metal. This study aims to determine the variation of the blow on the mechanical properties and microstructure. In this study, the material chosen was JIS SUP 9 steel with variations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 and a temperature of 900oC. The results of microstructural observations at 0 strokes show that the microstructure commonly found in low and medium carbon steels, at 25 hot working strokes the dominant microstructure in the second sample is Pearlite, at 50 hot working strokes the dominant microstructure in the second sample is ferrite. and pearlite began to shrink, 75 and 100 blows of hot working forging the dominant microstructure in the second sample was pearlite (black color). The results of the lowest hardness test at 0 strokes is 69.3 HRB, while the highest hardness value at 100 strokes is 93.67 HRB. This is due to the pressure and heat that give hardness to the material. The higher the stroke, the higher the hardness value on JIS SUP 9
