Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is a plantation crop that is in great demand to be managed and planted, both by state-owned enterprises, national and foreign private plantations, as well as smallholder plantations which produce many important needs such as cooking oil, industrial oil, and even for vehicle fuel. biodiesel). The use of processed palm oil products as an important need for daily life explains that the intensity of the production of oil palm fruit bunches must be maintained in order to maintain a balance between the number of needs and the amount of production. One way to maintain the production of oil palm fruit bunches is to protect oil palm plants from attacks by the caterpillar, Setothosea asigna. The cause of the caterpillar attack that occurs is the lack of monitoring of the population and the slow response to the caterpillars growing and breeding in oil palm plantations. Therefore, if there is no supervision in preventing the proliferation of caterpillars, this can damage oil palm plantations resulting in a lack of production of oil palm fruit bunches. In the development of this research program, digital image processing technology will be used to determine the growth rate of caterpillar pests by counting caterpillar cocoons.
