Abstract

Indonesian people still make rice as the main food crop. Rice production has shown a significant increase in almost all regions. Thus, many farmers depend on rice farming and still run their businesses on a small scale. With a relatively small business scale, the income earned from rice farming is also relatively lower. The purpose of this study is to (1). Analyzing the characteristics of farmers and lowland rice farming profiles, (2). Analyzing, production costs, production, income and efficiency of lowland rice farming, (3). Analyze marketing institutions, channels, functions, costs, profits, and efficiency. The method in this study uses the survey method. The research location was determined purposively in three villages in Muarasipongi District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra Province. Sampling was done by means of simple random sampling of 35 farmers. The data collected consists of primary data and secondary data. The data analysis method used is descriptive qualitative analysis and quantitative descriptive. The results showed that the average age of rice farmers was 46 years (productive age group). The gender of the farmers were 12 male (34.29%) and 23 female (65.71%). The average education of farmers is 6 years. The average experience of farmers in farming is 12 years and the number of dependents of the family is 3 people on average. Land ownership is partly self-owned and partly leased with an average land area of 0.67 Ha. Number of Workers 22.65 / HKP / Garapan, 33.80 / HKP / Ha, and Productivity 3,911 / Kg / Ha / Planting Season. The source of capital used by farmers is their own capital. Revenue from rice farming is IDR 14,272,800 / Garapan / Planting Season which is obtained from the production of 2,504 Kg / Garapan / Planting Season, the total production cost is IDR 5,473,530 / Garapan / Planting Season. The net income earned is IDR 8,799,270 / Garapan / planting season. The family work income earned is Rp. 11,111,835 / Garapan / planting season. Farming efficiency is 1.61, which means rice farming is profitable. Marketing institutions and channels involved in wetland rice marketing are farmer-trader-gatherer consumers. The marketing function is carried out by collecting traders as intermediary institutions that directly make purchases within the sub-district area. Marketing channels, both unhulled and processed rice, are carried out through collecting traders then to consumers. The marketing cost for lowland rice is Rp. 120 / Kg. Marketing profit received by traders is Rp. 3,680. Lowland rice marketing is efficient with an efficiency value of 1.09.
