Abstract

Instructional communication between teachers and mentally retarded students in fostering independence at SDLB Pekanbaru Erina Razaliani NPM: 169110008 Mentally retarded children have the same rights to pursue education as other normal children. One of the educational institutions for children with special needs in Pekanbaru is the Kasih Ibu Special School (SLB). Communication is needed in the process of fostering student independence. Through instructional communication, the teacher provides self-development learning to mentally retarded students so that their independence is better. This research uses qualitative research methods with behavioristic learning theory. The informants of this research are teachers who teach the mentally retarded SDLB. Data collection techniques with observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the instructional communication carried out by the teacher with mentally retarded students is going well. Teachers who use several learning methods such as commando, individual and practice methods that make it easier for teachers and students to do learning, and also by using several media, as well as separate teacher methods so that students want to follow the learning process.
