Abstract

ABSTRACT THE PROCESS OF ADAPTATION AND COMMUNICATION OF OVERSEAS STUDENTS FROM NORTH SUMATRA AT RIAU ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY IN OVERCOMING CULTURE SHOCK (STUDY OF BATAK ETHNIC STUDENTS AT RIAU ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY) RINA DWI ERNAWATI (139110017) This study aims to see the process of adaptation and communication among the Batak ethnic students from North Sumatra in overcoming culture shock at the Islamic University of Riau. Overseas students, especially students of the Batak ethnicity, when they first occupy a new environment, encounter many ethnicities and have to adapt. Batak ethnic students encounter cultural differences from Malay, including differences in language, new habits that make it difficult to adapt, which causes culture shock, namely the emergence of feelings of anxiety, disappointment so that Batak ethnic students must overcome them by adapting and communicating. Culture shock has four stages, namely one stage of joy or the honeymoon stage, the second stage, namely the disappointment stage, the third stage, namely the initial stage of resolution or the initial adjustment process, and the fourth stage, namely the continuing adjustment stage. In this study, researchers used descriptive qualitative research methods. The adaptation process carried out by Batak ethnic students is by seeing and hearing when they are gathered, making it easier for Batak ethnic students to adapt. The communication process carried out by the Batak ethnic students is by softening the tone when speaking according to the way of speaking ethnic Malays that are often encountered in Pekanbaru. By carrying out the adaptation process and this communication process, it was seen that the Batak ethnic students were able to handle culture shock well with the longest time being one month to overcome culture shock.
