Abstract
Family function is a process where each family member has a concern to find solutions to problems, develops effective communication between family members, shows behavior that pays attention to the emotional needs of each family member, is able to show proportional or not excessive emotional reactions, has attention and cares for each family member. The purpose of this study is to describe the functioning of the families of parents who have children with special needs. Subjects in this study amounted to 200 people with a sampling technique that is accindental sampling. Data collection in this study used a family functioning scale compiled by Herawati (2013) which consists of 17 items. The analysis used is descriptive statistical analysis. The results of this study are the parents of Pekanbaru and Perawang have a fairly good category of family function in 68 people with a percentage of 34.0%. The results of the statistical analysis of family functioning based on age in the middle adult category with a score range of 38 in the moderate category with a percentage of 30.2%. The results of the statistical analysis of family function based on female gender were in the good category with a percentage of 27.1%. From the analysis, it is concluded that the functioning of families who have children with special needs is classified as good, this is because all family members can provide support to each other socially and emotionally in caring for and raising children with special needs.
