Abstract

ABSTRACT Soil has different properties and characteristics. One type of soil that has low bearing capacity and shear strength is soft soil. In the construction of roads, problems are often encountered in the type of soft soil, including low bearing capacity and large settlement when given a load. This is because soft soils generally have low shear strength and permeability and high compressibility. Because soft soils have low permeability, the time required for consolidation is longer. So we need a soil improvement method to overcome this problem. This study aims to compare the behavior of the embankment on soft soil without reinforcement and with the reinforcement of the nailed slab system. The method used is a numerical method by creating an unreinforced embankment model and an embankment model with a nailed slab system reinforcement so that the magnitude of the settlement and stress-strain is obtained. The nailed slab system model is made with 15 cm thick plates and nails with a length of 1.5 m, a diameter of 20 cm and a distance between posts of 1.0 m. The embankment model on soft clay is modeled as high as 2.0 m with a soft clay soil depth of 6.0 m. The results showed that the reduction of settlement and displacement in the embankment model with a nailed slab system compared to that without reinforcement where with a nailed slab system the max Utot value was 4.115 cm, Uy max was 4.088 cm and Ux max was 1.573 cm and without reinforcement, the max Utot value was 5.919 cm, Uy max of 5,149 cm and Ux max of 4,347 cm. The greatest reduction in total settlement (Uy) on the surface of the embankment is 22% and the settlement that occurs also becomes more uniform ΔS by 0.2 cm. Shear stresses and shear strains that occur in soft soil at 20 cm under the nailed slab system are also smaller than those without reinforcement.
