Abstract
The Symbolic Meaning of the “Jib Gong” Ceremony of the Chinese Ethnic Bagansiapiapi Mialvina 189110062 This study aims to understand the symbolic meaning of the Jib Gong Ceremony. Most of the funeral ceremonies are carried out with a variety of existing ceremonies, namely: The Jib Bok ceremony is a ceremony to put the corpse into a box or coffin. Furthermore, the Mai Song Ceremony is a ceremony before departure at night. While Sang Cong is a departure ritual ceremony and the last ceremony is the Jib Gong Ceremony which is a ceremony held at the cemetery. The Jib Gong ceremony is the last ceremony carried out, which means the last respect for the ancestors and also the corpse. The death ceremony is carried out in accordance with the time. Jib Gong means putting the corpse into the grave, this procession in Chinese belief is prioritized as a form of respect and this ceremony is still carried out because it includes traditions and culture in Buddhism and Confucianism. In Buddhism and Confucianism, Chinese funeral ceremonies are carried out using silver paper which is used as a material to be burned as a sign of good luck or can give pieces of money to their ancestors and they also use incense or incense which is used at funeral prayers. While in the customs and customs of the funeral ceremony they carry out several processions such as surrounding the coffin that has been buried, drinking water in the same glass and also burning paper and they are also required to wear mourning clothes with the aim of being grieving. Chinese tombs are also made according to their age, such as one week old tombs they will put palm leaves on the coffin, while the age of one year and over the tomb is made in the form of a pillow that is arranged and also a tomb that is considered luxurious is a tomb that has a middle and upper economy and is already fairly permanent grave.
