Abstract

The rapid development of media and technology allows various information and new cultures to enter various parts of the world. Continuously, this situation then affects the standardization and values in various fields of life in society, including the image of the ideal body shape for women and men. Self-image is an individual's assessment of one's appearance and accompanying feelings and views of others towards us. Body shaming is a negative evaluation of the body and emotions and the desire to hide himself or his body shape. This study aims to determine the relationship between body shaming treatment and self-image in students of the Psychology Faculty of the Islamic University of Riau. The population of this study were students of the Psychology Faculty of the Islamic University of Riau with a population of 843. The data collection process used a self-image scale developed by the researcher himself and a body shaming scale developed by the researcher himself. The sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling with a total sample of 272 subjects. While the statistical analysis used in this research is using the product moment. The results of the analytical test that have been carried out show that the correlation coefficient score between body shaming and self-image is 0.093 with a p value of 0.125 (p > 0.05). This means that based on these results, the hypothesis in this study was rejected.
