Abstract

Rejection basically gives the impression or feeling of disappointment to the interlocutor, because something expected is not as expected. However, the refusal will not give a disappointing impression if the refusal is spoken in polite and courteous language. On the other hand, rejection will be very painful and disappointing if it is expressed in harsh or harsh expressions or language. This study examines 2 problems to be investigated, namely: how are the forms of rejection speech in the Batak community in Air Jamban village, Mandau sub-district, Bengkalis district, how is the politeness of rejection speech in the Batak community in Air Jamban village, Mandau sub-district, Bengkalis district. This study aims to explore and elaborate data on the form of rejection speech and the politeness scale of rejection. The theory used in this research is Kartomihardjo in Nadar, F X. (2009), and Leech in Rahardi (2005). The method used in this research is content analysis method. This study uses a qualitative approach (qualitative approach). The source of data in this study is the speech of the Batak community in Air Jamban Village, Mandau District, Bengkalis Regency. This type of research is field research. The data collection technique in this study used the technique of documentation, refer to the conversation, tapping, fishing, recording and note-taking. The results show that the Batak community is more dominant in using rejection with comments. This shows that giving comments when refusing offers, invitations, orders, and appeals will be considered more appropriate and not detrimental to the other person. The most related politeness scale is the indirectness scale. Furthermore, the Batak community is more dominant in using the indirectness scale when making rejection speeches. This shows that the rejection speech expressed by the Batak community is classified as polite
