Abstract

Drilling mud is the most important element in a drilling operation. The most important purpose of using drilling mud is so that in the drilling process there are no difficulties that can interfere with the smooth operation of the drilling itself. Drilling mud can function properly, so the mud must always be controlled for its physical properties, which include: mud weight, viscosity, gel strength and sieve rate. In this study, researchers will conduct a laboratory analysis of paraffin oil and compare the results with biodiesel, which mineral oil/paraffin is expected to be used as an alternative in the manufacture of oil based mud. In this study, several samples will be carried out where the results of these samples include rheology, filtration loss and mud cake as well as contamination that occurs when NaCl is added to the oil based mud. From the test results for oil based mud with different oil water ratios, the best test results were obtained by biodiesel with an oil water ratio of 70/30 with a density value of 8.1ppg, plastic viscosity 15cp, yield point 18 lb/100 ft², gel strength 0.63 lb. /100 ft², as well as a filtration loss of 14 ml and a mud cake thickness of 1.1 mm. As for the effect of the addition of NaCl of 5gr at OWR 70/30 with a density value of 8.2ppg, plastic viscosity 13cp, yield point 16 lb/100 ft², gel strength 0.6 lb/100 ft², and filtration loss 16.2 ml and thickness mud cake 1.3 mm. For the addition of 10gr NaCl, the density value is 8.5ppg, plastic viscosity is 11cp, yield point is 15 lb/100 ft², gel strength is 0.4 lb/100 ft², and filtration loss is 17.4 ml and mud cake thickness is 1.5 mm. So it can be concluded that oil-based mud based on biodiesel has a better ability than paraffin oil-based oil for a laboratory scale even after adding NaCl to its composition.
