Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of racial discrimination that exist in the film scene of The Hate U Give by using John Fiske's semiotics. This research begins with a film made with a crime and drama bandage adapted from the novel entitled The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, then this film was directed by George Tillman Jr and produced by Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. by Audrey Wells. Starring Amandla Stenberg (Starr Carter) as a 16-year-old black girl attending a prestigious school where the students are predominantly white while Starr lives in a black neighborhood. In this film there are scenes that want to find out their meaning through John Fiske's theory, by going through three levels of the coding process from The Codes of Television theory, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. In this study using qualitative research methods with semiotic analysis approach. This research uses triangulation technique. Data collection techniques using observation, documentation, and interviews. The results of this study indicate that this film wants to convey a message to the audience that apart from being an action drama genre film, it also presents a lesson to the public, by way of Starr to demand justice from his childhood friend who was shot by a police officer Cuts from scenes played by Starr Carter show that victims of discrimination who are treated unfairly have a higher risk of developing stress-related mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression.
