Abstract
During the process of learning mathematics students are often confronted with problems that cannot be solved immediately meaning students must think and reason first, try, estimate, model and use simple formulas and then prove them, therefore students need to have thinking skills. This study aims to describe the error analysis of students completing the problem description in the material number patterns. The research sample consisted of 30 students in class VIII-2 of SMP Negeri 9 Pekanbaru. Data collection in this study was carried out by giving questions and interviews to students. Giving questions to students is used to find out students' mistakes in completing problem descriptions. While the interview is used to emphasize the students' mistakes in solving the problem description. The results of the analysis of the students' error analysis of completing the elaboration questions of class VIII-2 of SMP Negeri 9 Pekanbaru show that misunderstanding of questions by 33,75% dominate more than other forms of errors, namely fact errors of 24,16% , Concept errors of 9,85%, principle errors of 4,99% and operating errors of 2,5%.
