Abstract

Analysis of Euphemism in the Editorial Plan of Riau Post Adisi in March 2019 Language plays an important role in people's lives as a means of communication where every member of the community, a particular community or group is always involved in communication, whether acting as a speaker or writer or as a talking partner, listener, or reader. In the use of language, speakers can use speech or style of language. Effective readers and writers really use the language of class or speech to explain their ideas. Euphemism is derived from the Greek "eufhemizein" which means to use words with good meanings or with good intentions. The use of euphemisms contained in the news often obscures the reality, this has an impact on the reader who is difficult to distinguish the truth that there is causing various perspectives on a phenomenon. This study aims (1) to describe the form of euphemism in the March 2019 edition of the Riau Post newspaper editorial (2) to describe the function of the euphemism in the March 2019 edition of the Riau Post newspaper editorial. This type of research uses descriptive methods that describe. Data collection began on March 1 until March 31, 2019. Sources of data in the study were editorial plans for the Riau Post newspaper in March edition, which were published on Monday to Saturday, except for Sundays, then obtained 26 editorials to be used as research material. The object of research is the use of euphemism in the March 2019 edition of Riau Pos newspaper. The results of the study are as follows: First, the form of euphemism is classified into 5 namely (1) use of abbreviations, (2) use of absorption words, (3) use of foreign terms, (4) the use of metaphors, (5) the use of peripherals. From these data it can be seen that the use of the most dominant forms of euphemisms is the use of euphemisms in the form of words of uptake, amounting to 33 data. Then, the least used is euphemism in the form of abbreviations with the amount of 7 data. Second, the benefits of using euphemisms are classified into 5, namely (1) as a means of refining speech, (2) as a tool to keep things secret, (3) as an educational tool, (4) as a means of repelling danger, (5) as a means of diplomacy. From these data it can be seen that the most dominant use of euphemistic functions functions as a means of smoothing speech with a total of 50 data while the least used is as a diplomacy with only 1 data.
