Abstract

The majority and minority groups are no exception. The emergence of these social classifications makes many parties want to represent them through media that can describe social reality. As a representation of a reality, films shape and represent reality based on codes, conventions, and ideologies. The series When They See Us by Ava DuVernay, produced by Netflix was selected for discussion in this study. This series is based on the events of the controversial Central Park Jogger Case that took place in 1989. The series tells the story of discrimination cases and explores the lives of five black male suspects who are accused and charged with raping and assaulting a white woman in Central Park, New York City. The discrimination depicted in the series is quite explicit. This research uses descriptive qualitative with semiotic method. To analyze the data, this study uses John Fiske's semiotic analysis at the third level of analysis, the ideological level. The result of this research is that this film depicts the ideology of racism which includes racial prejudice, racial stereotypes, and racial discrimination in the form of discrimination against minority characters who are black races in America by the white race which is depicted through scenes in each episode, both verbal and non-verbal. physical violence experienced by minority characters in the series.
