Abstract

Energy needs will always increase along with technological and industrial developments. Research at this time leads to alternative energy that is innovative and effective. One of the energy sources that is widely used in research is the use of water flow as a microhydro power plant that can be used to convert water flow into electrical energy. Vortex turbines are one of the classifications in microhydro turbines that utilize whirlpools to move the blades. The vortex turbine has a relatively low head, which is 0.7 m – 3 m with a discharge of 50 L/s. This type of turbine is very suitable when used for river flow, because most rivers have low heads. The purpose of this study was to obtain a vortex turbine with good performance, both in terms of the power produced and in terms of efficiency by varying the impeller diameter and water drop height to get better turbine performance. The impeller diameter variations are 16 cm, 18 cm, and 20 cm. Meanwhile, the variations in the height of the water fall are 4 cm, 8 cm, 12 cm, 16 cm, and 20 cm. The results of this study are the impeller with a diameter of 16 cm with a water drop height of 20 cm produces the largest mechanical power (Pmek) and turbine efficiency (ηt) among impellers and other water fall heights, namely mechanical power (Pmek) of 18.409 W or 0.0247 hp. , dynamo power (PDinamo) is 7,795 W and turbine efficiency (ηt) is 60,645%.
