Abstract

This study examines the mix of codes in student and teacher speech as well as its causal factors. The problem in this research is how the code mixes in the speech of students and teachers in SMPN 10 Pekanbaru and what are the factors causing the occurrence of code mixing in the speech of students and teachers in SMPN 10 Pekanbaru. This study aims to determine the mix of codes in the speech of students and teachers in SMPN 10 Pekanbaru and the causes of code mixing in the speech of students and teachers in SMPN 10 Pekanbaru. The method used is descriptive method. The theory used is the theory of Chaer and Agustina (2010) and Sumarsono (2012) about code mixing, and Nababan (1993) about the factors that cause code mixing. Students and teachers at Pekanbaru 10 Public Middle School have mixed or inserted several languages in their speech. The languages used in the code mix are Minang, Javanese, Malay, and English. Language insertion is done at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the sentence. The most dominant causative factors in code mixing in the speech of students and teachers in SMPN 10 Pekanbaru are: Relaxation or informal situation there are 60 speech mix codes. The absence of an exact expression there are 6 speech mix codes. Showing off their knowledge or position there are 13 speech mix codes.
