Abstract

In the petroleum industry, polymers are divided into two types, that is synthetic polymers and biopolymers. Biopolymers are natural-based polymers from plants that are found around us, in several previous studies, the main requirement for making biopolymers is the presence of polysaccharides or commonly called carbohydrates. Taro is one of the plants that contains polysaccharides with a percentage of 83.03%, so that taro can be used as an alternative material for biopolymers. This study aims to examine the characteristics of biopolymers made from taro starch, and to make xanthan gum as a comparison parameter of the results of this study. The test parameters in this study include compatibility test, density test, solubility test, gelation time test, and pH test. From the results of the compatibility test there are 7 solutions that are compatible for taro starch, including in a concentration of 500 ppm polymer and 5000 ppm salinity, 30.000 ppm, and 60.000 ppm at each temperature of 70°C and 80°C, and compatible in a concentration of 1000 ppm with a salinity of 5000 ppm in temperature 80°C. Then there are 11 compatible solutions for xanthan gum including in concentrations of 500 ppm with salinity of 5000 ppm, 30.000 ppm, and 60.000 ppm at all test temperatures, and in concentrations of 1000 ppm with salinity of 5000 ppm in temperatures of 70°C and 80°C. Density testing is carried out using a pycnometer, the results of this test showed that the second polymer material had an increase in density with increasing polymer concentration and decreased in density value along with an increase in temperature testing. In the solubility test, the results showed that the higher salinity concentration of the brine and the polymer concentration will make longer the polymer dissolved, and then if the higher temperature test will make faster polymer to dissolve. In gelation test, it was shown that the higher the temperature will making faster the gelation time process, and then the higher polymer concentration and salinity concentration will make longer gelation time process. In the last test, namely the pH test, the results showed that higher salinity concentration will make lower pH value and higher polymer concentration will make higher pH value.
