Abstract

Relationship Between Social Support and Coping Strategies (Problem Focused Coping) in Parents Who Has An Autistic Child In Pekanbaru Lab School WIDIYA LUMBAN GAOL NPM. 158110074 FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF RIAU ABSTRACT The underlying problem in this study is the coping strategy is the very important to do by parents who have autistic children because it will help reduce the level of stress experienced. Parents who are quite satisfied, states that the family, teaching teacher, and pediatrician are very helpful in caring for and educating children with autism. However, parents who have not satisfied yet enough with support from the family, state that the family sometimes helps in caring for and educating children with autism. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between social support and coping strategies (problem focused coping) in parents in educating autistic children in Pekanbaru Lab School. The study population of parents of autistic children at Pekanbaru Lab School was 54 people. The sampling technique is saturated technique. Data collection uses a social support scale of 34 items and problem focused coping with 29 items, then the data obtained are analyzed using product moment analysis. Based on the results of the analysis of this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between social support and coping strategies (problem focused coping), which means that the higher the social support, the higher the coping strategy by parents and conversely the lower the level of social support, the more also low coping strategies that parents do. The effective contribution of social support premises coping strategies (problem focused coping) to parents amounted to 26.8%.
