Abstract

This study aims to improve students' understanding on islamic studiesat the eleventh grade of SMP Al-Ulum Islamic School Pekanbaru by using the talking stick learning model. This study is a classroom action research, one of the efforts to improve students' understanding on each lesson material presented in the subject of Islamic studies. Previously, the reseacherobserved that there were some students who had low understanding in learning, so it needs an effort to solve this problem or to find its solution. The problem formulation of this study is whether the application of talking stick learning model can improve students' understanding on Islamic studies at the eleventh grade ofSMP Al-Ulum Islamic School Pekanbaru. This study aims to investigate the application of talking stick learning model to improve students’ understanding on Islamic studiesat the eleventh grade of SMP Al-Ulum Islamic School Pekanbaru. Based on the data obtained, it found that the students’understanding onislamic studies before using the talking stick learning model is in the low category with a percentage of 48%. After using the talking stick learning model at the first cycle, the students' understanding on islamic studies has increased up to a percentage of 56% or in the medium category. Because the learning outcomes have not achievedthe expected goal and there are some weaknesses, then it is continued to the second cycle, in this cycle students' understanding of learning increases very well with a percentage of 87% or in the very high category. Because the outcomes have reached the desired result, then the cycle is not continued to the next stage. In conclusion, the results of this study show that the application of talking stick learning model can improve students’understanding on Islamic Studiesat the eleventh grade of SMP Al-Ulum Islamic School Pekanbaru to the category of "Very High", itis based on the percentage result of 87%.
