Abstract

The radiator functions as a heat exchanger on the vehicle engine that is used to transfer heat energy from one medium to another whose purpose is to cool the engine with liquid media. In its application the use of coolant is often mixed with mineral water, well water and others. This research was conducted with the aim of obtaining the effectiveness of cooling and corrosion rate of brass material in radiator due to the use of different cooling media. The cooling media used are coolant radiator, coolant radi ator + mineral water and aquades water. Cooling effectiveness test is carried out at a constant speed of 1500 rpm with varying times of 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes. While the corrosion rate is obtained through the immersion test method with a soaking time of 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days. The results of the calculation of the effectiveness of cooling radiators show the average value of the radiator coolant media of 21.15%, the average value of the radiator coolant media + mineral water by 18.4% and the average val ue of the aquades media by 16.7% . The average weight loss on radiator coolant media is 0.0089 grams and the average corrosion rate is 0.0068 mm / year, the average weight loss on radiator coolant media + water is 0.0116 grams and the average corrosion rat e is 0.0091 mm / years whereas in aquades water media the average weight loss is 0.0101 grams and the average corrosion rate is 0.0078 mm / year. This research shows that the highest value of radiator cooling effectiveness is shown by the radiator coolant media. While the cooling medium used also gives a different effect on the corrosion rate, where the highest corrosion rate is shown by the coolant radiator + mineral water testing media.
