Abstract
Thresher is one of the core stations in the palm oil mill that functions to separate the fruit from the palm oil branches. Spider thresher serves as a buffer between the shaft to the drum thresher. The s pider thresher component is a square rod that is connected from the shaft to the drum thresher. In this study, an analysis of the causes of spider thresher failure in palm oil mills (PKS) was conducted with the aim of analyzing the causal factors and mecha nisms for the failure of spider thresher components in oil palm mills. Tests conducted to analyze this failure are composition test, visual observation, microstructure observation and hardness test. The hardness value of the three indentation points is 1: 158 HV, 2: 172 HV, and 3: 169 HV has an average value of 166 HV, after testing it is found that the factors that cause the failure of spider thresher components in the palm oil plant are an error material selection. The failure mechanism of the spider thre sher component in the palm oil mill is initiated by the initial crack in the middle of the spider arch due to the repetitive stress which then the voltage propagates on the surface of the spider thresher before the final fracture occurs because the spider shresher is unable to withstand the stresses that occur causing a fatigue failure.
