Abstract

Controlling rheology and filtration loss in drilling mud are important factors for drilling. The water base mud usually uses water and bentonite. But lately it’s important to find materials that have the same properties and content as bentonite and more environmentally friendly. Fly ash (FA) is an organic material that is not in affected by the surrounding environment. FA has a dominant silica content and pozzolanic properties or binds to particles when contaminated with water, this makes FA can affect the rheology and filtration loss in drilling mud. The material used in this study was FA from ampel bamboo leaves calcined at 600°C for 2 hours and sieved with a 400 mesh. Then FA sonicated to break down the particles. FA characterized using X-Ray Fluoresence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then FA is used as a drilling mud additive with concentrations variations of FA 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% and additional additives for Xanthan Gum, polyanionic cellulose, Carboxy Methil Cellulose, and Potassium Chloride for tested on the rheology and filtration loss of drilling mud with a Fann VG meter and LPLT Filter Press. The results of XRF characterization showed that the FA of ampel bamboo leaves contained SiO2 = 57.06% and CaO = 6.72% which were categorized as FA type C.The XRD characterization results showed that the angle 2Ɵ = 26.6 ° was the crystalline quartz phase and the angle 2Ɵ = 28.1 ° was the crystalline phase enstatite. And the results of SEM characterization showed that FA ampel bamboo leaves had a granular morphology and resembled the morphology of FA coal. The rheology and filtration loss test results obtained by adding variations FA concentration of ampel bamboo leaves resulted in rheological values that did not change significantly, while the filtration loss value decreased the volume of the filtrate along with the addition of variations FA concentration.
