Abstract

Drilling mud is an important element in drilling activities, which is can cleaning the borehole from cuttings in drilling well. Drilling mud is circulated through the annulus hole and flowed continuously. Bentonite commonly used in the drilling mud. Along with time, the use of less efficient bentonite tends to increase so that alternative materials are needed that can replace the bentonite. The material that can be used is fly ash from ampel bamboo leaves which is a material that is predominantly silica (SiO2) where silica has pozzolanic properties. The nature of pozzolan binds to fly ash silica particles which can accumulate to form impermeable mudcake which can suppress the lost filtrate. Ampel bamboo leaves were calcined using an oven furnace for 2 hours, set at 600 ° C, then fly ash filtered using 400 mesh sieve. Samples were tested by XRD, XRF, and SEM to determine the concentration of the compound and the morphological shape of the ampel bamboo leaf fly ash sample. Furthermore, the sample is used in the drilling mud and tested for rheology and filtration loss values. Sample variation is using sample of ampel bamboo leaf fly ash 4%, 5%, 6.5%, and 7% then compared with the standard 6.5% bentonite sample. Each sample used additive such as xanthan gum, polyanionic cellulose, pregelatinized starch, and potassium chloride. Based on the sample content of ampel bamboo leaf fly ash, obtained SiO2 = 57.06%, Al2O3 = 1.65%, and Fe2O3 = 0.26% are type C fly ash. The crystals contained in ampel bamboo leaf fly ash are predominantly quartz crystals which are the initial phase of silica and enstatite which is a silica-magnesium bond chain. The results of testing for filtration loss and mud cake for drilling mud obtained a sample concentration of 5% fly ash with a filtrate volume of 8.5 ml and a mud cake thickness of 2.05 mm. Ampel bamboo leaf fly ash is categorized as a viscosifier with the rheology results of drilling mud having a viscosity value range of 25-36 cP, Yp / μp = 1.12-1.57, Gel strength 0.66-0.73 lb / 100 ft2.
