Abstract

Clay swelling is one of the problems that often occurs in drilling activities. The clay zone will expand in the shale layer when using water based mud because clay will react with water which can cause precipitation in rock formations and affect the quality of the pipe. In addition, if the pipeline is not resolved immediately, it will be pinched and will shorten the life of the well hole, causing expensive operating costs. To overcome this problem, oil based mud is needed. Because oil based mud is resistant to high temperatures and pressures and has the advantage of controlling viscosity, increasing gel strength, reducing the effects of water contamination and filtrate loss. Diesel, pertadex, new oil and lubricant oil are used in this study as the main ingredients for oil based mud. This study used an experimental method using B3 waste or lubricant oil as an alternative material for oil based mud. Oil based mud made from lubricant oil is expected to be more effective and better than diesel, which is the main ingredient of oil based mud used in the field. This oil based mud test uses 12 mud samples with different oil water ratio, namely 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20 to test the parameters of density, rheology, filtration loss and mud cake according to API standard procedures. From the results of oil based mud testing with different oil water ratio, the best results were obtained from diesel oil with an oil water ratio of 70/30, with a density value of 8.22 ppg, 12 cp plastic viscosity, 16 lb / 100 ft² yield point, 5 / gel strength. 5 lb / 100 ft², with 15 ml loss filtrate and 1 mm thick mud cake. while other base oils are still in good value for oil based mud. So, it can be concluded that diesel based oil based mud has better capabilities than pertadex base oil, new oil and lubricant oil for laboratory scale.
